Opened in 1928 under the name of Pan American Field, the airport is about 8 km or 5 miles northwest of downtown Miami, between the suburbs of Doral, Miami Springs and West Miami. The terminal area is best reached on the Florida State Road 112 (Airport Expy) at exit 2 to 3 and on State Road 953 (N. LeJeune Road).
Miami-Dade Transit (MDT) has an extensive public transport network and operates regular services from the airport with the busroute J which stops about 2 km (less than a mile) east of Tri-Rail station, from where there is a direct connection to a total of 18 railway stations on the west coast, for example Fort Lauderdale International Airport or Palm Beach International Airport. This bus goes to Miami Beach and also stops at the Allapattah Metrorail Station (Green Line). The bus route 37 also serves the airport and goes for example to South Miami, bus route 42 goes to Coconut Grove, bus route 57 to Palmetto Bay, bus route133 (Tri-Rail Shuttle) and bus 150 (Airport Flyer) to Miami Beach and bus 238 (Earlington Heights Metro Station - Dolphin Mall).
