The City of Pearls

Hyderabad is the sparkling capital city of Telangana, a South Indian State. It is sometimes referred to as the City of Pearls because initially it was the only global hub of large diamonds and natural pearls trade.

Hyderabad's attractions and festivals

Hyderabad is a welcoming place to visit throughout the year although the best time to travel is October-March when it is warm and sunny. Hyderabad experiences summer from March to June with very hot temperatures. The monsoon season occurs from July to October. The Hindu and Muslims celebrate their festivals in the city on varied dates. Among the liveliest festivals celebrated is Eid al-Fitr which marks the end of Ramadan, Diwali is celebrated in October (festival of lights), and the Ganesh Chaturthi in August and September. The city is known for its numerous museums and temples such as Masjid Mecca, the magnificent white marble Hindu temple-Birla Mandir, and the lovely Charminar temple that resembles the Taj Mahal.

Visas are needed to enter India and passports need two blank pages and a minimum validity of 180 days when applying. Consult a doctor two months prior to departure to ensure routine vaccines and required boosters are received. Recommended jabs are Hepatitis A, Typhoid, and Tetanus. Also, consider vaccines for Diphtheria, Japanese Encephalitis, Hepatitis B, Cholera and Rabies particularly if visiting other regions in India.

Arriving and finding your way around

The state language is Telugu. However, Urdu is also widely spoken. The currency in Hyderabad is the Rupee. A fee of around Rs.1,000 termed as User Development Fee (UDF) is charged in many airports on arrival and sometimes it is added to the airfare. The cost of living in Hyderabad is relatively cheap. A restaurant meal costs roughly Rs.250. From the airport, shuttle buses and radio cabs found at the arrivals terminals take visitors to the city. The fares for public transport cost roughly Rs.20. Accommodation varies in different hotels and guesthouses. The cheapest are around Rs.1,000 whereas luxurious ones cost roughly Rs.3,500. Hyderabad receives increasing numbers of business travelers annually since it is an important IT focal point and also a renowned tourist destination.
