Delhi is the capital city of India and one of the most populous cities in Asia; approximately 16 million people inhabit the metropolitan area alone. It is also one of India's oldest cites, with some sites dating from the 6th century BC. The modern city is a vast metropolis that has grown from various towns merging together over the centuries.
Due to the high summer temperatures, it's best to visit between October and March. The Holi spring festival is a cultural celebration on the Hindu calendar held in March. If you do visit in summer, Independence Day is celebrated annually on the 15th of August when a parade passes through the city and residents fly kites in celebration of freedom. Worthwhile places to visit include the India Gate, a memorial to Indian soldiers lost in the Afghan and First World War, and Rashtrapati Bhavan, the Presidential Palace.
To access the country, you must obtain a visa via the Indian High Commission or your local consulate. Your passport must have two blank pages to accommodate the visa and be valid for a minimum of 180 days when applying. Depending on where you are traveling from, certain vaccinations may be required. Commonly recommended vaccines include hepatitis A, typhoid and tetanus. Poor sanitation in some areas can compromise water quality so be sure to confirm with your hotel before drinking from the taps. Women should be particularly careful when travelling alone. The cost of food and other expenses are much lower than in the UK, though you should be vigilant as to where you eat; poor hygiene and sanitation can result in food poisoning.
Both a bus and metro service connect the airport with Connaught Place in central Delhi. Cabs are cheap in comparison to US rates and are the better option at night. Accommodation is also cheaper, with a wide variety of 3+star hotels in Connaught Place alone. Prices start at approximately IR1400 per night, though if you are looking for something even cheaper, you might consider a hostel for approximately IR500. The city has a wealth of attractions to explore and you are likely to see your money go further in terms of accommodation and transport than other international locations.
