The best time to visit Delhi is from October to March. The climate is monsoon influenced and it is cooler and drier in these months. Visit during holidays and festivals and experience Indian culture. The Holi spring festival is in March, the exact date changes according to the Hindu calendar. The 15 August is Independence Day with a big parade in Delhi.

Useful Delhi tips

A visa is needed to visit Delhi. Valid passports require two blank pages for the visa and need to be be valid for at least 180 days at the time of application.

A valid polio vaccine certificate is needed if arriving from certain countries. other recommended vaccines include hepatitis A, typhoid, tetanus and diphtheria. Women should be especially vigilant when traveling alone. Indian prices are much lower than US prices and quality electronics cost about the same. 

Local Delhi information: arriving, hotels and transport

To get from Indira Gandhi International Airport to central Delhi take Metro line 2 from 4.40 in the morning until 23.30 hours or a shuttle bus to Connaught Place. A prepaid cab can be ordered before travel. There is a variety of accommodation. Rated hotels are expensive but guest houses and hostels are available from approximately 500 INR per person per night. Cheap three star hotels cost on average 1400 INR per person per night. There is an inexpensive public transport system that includes buses, metros and rickshaws. Cab prices are also much cheaper than in the US. The Metro is a good way to reach most tourist destinations. A Metro card costs a 50 Rupees deposit and some cash will need to be added.
