History
St. Louis - Lambert International Airport has its beginnings at the airfield built by Major Albert Bond Lambert in 1920 on the grounds of the Balloon sports fields “Kinloch Field“ which he sold to the city of St. Louis in 1927. Lambert Field was therefore the first communal airport of the United States. (Charles Lindbergh took off from the airport in 1927 for his record-breaking flight to Paris.)
In 1982 Trans World Airlines (TWA) moved its hub from Kansas City International Airport to Lambert and became the dominating airline at St. Louis airport. After TWA was bought by American Airlines and they merged their connections in 2001, the airport Lambert - St. Louis relieved the already existing hubs of American in Chicago O’Hare and Dallas/Fort Worth of their burden. Many main flight routes were given to American Connection, a group of regional airlines. Today Saint Louis is the fourth largest hub of American Airlines after Dallas/Fort Worth, Chicago O’Hare and Miami International Airport.
