Explore Tokyo. Best time to go
Tokyo boasts a mix of traditional and modern Japanese culture. The Senso temple or the Imperial Palace will give visitors an idea of Japan’s past. Travel to Tokyo is best between March and May. End of June till mid July is the rainy season and there is a danger of typhoons between September and October. Popular travel time is during the cherry blossom which is between end of March and beginning of May and is marked by countless cherry blossom festivals, the “Hanami”. Sumida Hanabi fireworks take place every year in July and the street festival "Koenji Awa Odori" is held on the last weekend in August.
Visitors should be aware of the frequent earthquakes in Japan.
Preparing to go to Tokyo
Normally US citizens will not require a visa to travel to Japan for less than 90 days. Stays can be extended in Japan.
Between 29.12 and 3.1 many shops and offices are closed. Visitors should always carry ID when out and about. For an idea of prices: 800 Yen will usually pay for a meal in a restaurant. Basic Noodles will cost around 450 Yen.
Narita Airport to city transport is provided by R Narita Express for about 3000 Yen one way. Buses are cheaper (900 to 2000 Yen), and will take 80 minutes into the central city. The Tokyo Monorail will take 14 minutes and cost about 500 Yen. Public transport in Tokyo is provided by underground, overground trains and buses and prices vary according to the transport provider. Using the Suica or PASMO travel cards will cover most providers, cost 500 yen and can be topped up as needed. One way trips cost between 110 and 310 Yen, "Tokyo Free Kippu" is a day travel card for underground, overground trains and is available for around 1600 Yen. Walking is also a good way of exploring Tokyo. Hostels will cost about 2000 yen per person/night, and 3 star hotels about 3200 Yen.
