Montserrat was discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1493 and derives its name from a monastery in the mountain of Montserrat in Spain. In 1632, English and Irish settlers began to arrive here. From 1871 to 1956, Montserrat was part of the Federation of the Leeward Islands. In 1958, it became a member of the West Indies Federation. In 1962, there was a referendum and the inhabitants of Montserrat decided to remain a British Crown Colony. Volcanic eruptions in 1997 and 2003 caused the history of the island to take a dramatic turning. Vast areas of the country were devastated and the face of the island was irreversibly changed. A further eruption followed in 2010 and the volcano is being observed closely.

Montserrat is of volcanic origin. After remaining dormant for 400 years, the Soufriere Hills volcano erupted in 1995. The southern part of the island is a restricted zone and most of t he population was evacuated. This part of the island attracts large numbers of visitors interested in the geological origin of the island and wishing to observe the volcanic activity.
