Bogota travel tips

Bogotá, Colombia's capital city steeped in history

Bogotá, located in a fertile plateau of the Andes, attracts visitors from all parts of the world with its historical sights, parks and typical amenities that a metropolis of millions has to offer.

From a climatic point of view, Bogotá can be visited all year round. Due to the high altitude, the thermometer rarely rises above 23 degrees. December to March and July to August are the drier months.

Interesting holidays are for example in March/April the "Semana Santa" at Easter and on August 5 and 6 the "Carnaval de Bogotá" for the anniversary of the city foundation, which is celebrated with parades, folklore and lots of music.

US citizens do not need a visa to travel to Colombia; however, passports should be valid.

The danger of robberies and trick thefts is still present. Here, due to the generally high propensity to violence, no resistance should be offered.

Bogota: Before the trip, cost of living and accommodations

Before departure, it is recommended to refresh the standard vaccinations such as tetanus, diphtheria, but also hepatitis A, rabies and typhoid. If you are planning to travel on to yellow fever areas of the country, a yellow fever vaccination is also strongly advised.

Effective mosquito protection is important. Furthermore, attention should be paid to drinking water hygiene.

"Ajiaco" is a culinary specialty that should be tried. It is a creamy chicken soup with different kinds of potatoes and corn on the cob, garnished with cream and capers and served with rice and avocado.

The cost of living depends greatly on the area. Restaurant meals start at about 16,000 COP. A beer costs from about 3,500 COP. A lunch meal is offered from about 10,000 COP.

After arriving at El Dorado Airport, the traveler can get to the center of the city by cab for about 15,000-25,000 COP. The trip takes about 20 minutes. The bus covers the distance for about 1,700 COP.

Starting at about 25,000 COP, the city's hostels offer accommodations; three-star hotels charge from about 52,000 COP. A popular area for budget overnight stays is the historic neighborhood of La Candelaria.

Local bus transportation is very inexpensive, with TransMilenio express buses using dedicated bus lanes. Ticket prices for this start at around 2,000 COP.
