Location
In 1976 the first underground station was opened at the airport. This was the terminus of trains running on the Roissy-Rail Line (now part of the RER-B) from Paris Gare du Nord. Since 1994, RER trains also go to the station at Terminal 2, where TGV trains also stop. The name of the old terminus is now Aéroport Charles de Gaulle 1 (T.3), and the new second terminus is called Aéroport Charles de Gaulle 2 TGV.
RER, Réseau Express Regional, is a fast urban rail link. The station of Antony is also on the RER Line B, from where the station in Terminals 2 and 3 as well Paris Orly airport may also be reached. Passengers may change here for the OrlyVAL trains that take passengers in under 15 minutes to Orly-Ouest and Orly-Sud. The regular departure times make this a better option than the Air France Bus.
Many national French connections are operated from Orly, where Air Inter, a domestic operater has its hub and therefore these connections to the airport are still significant. Line 3 of Air France’s coaches ( Cars Air France) provides a direct link between the two airports Roissy and Orly and stops at all terminals.
History
Initially named Paris Nord, the original plan was to call the airport Roissy Airport. A year before it was opened however, it was renamed after the deceased French statesman General de Gaulle. The airport operator Aéroports de Paris (ADP), formerly subject to public law, had a status that verged on that of an authority. From its establishment in 1945 to its privatisation in 2005, it was, according to law, responsible for all airfields within a 50 km radius of Paris. It was therefore possible to centrally control the development of Paris’ airport system and to fully design the airport on the drawing board within just a few years. On the 09.03.1974, the airport was taken into operation as Charles de Gaulle Airport. The compound, with a total area of 3500 ha, is about a third as large as the city of Paris inside the Boulevard périphérique.
