Location
First in use in 1954, the airport is about 10 kilometers or 7 miles southwest of downtown in the town of Meenambakkam, on the highway NH45 to Chengalpattu. The airport is the only airport on the Indian subcontinent with its own rail station, the Tirusulam. The "South Line" of the Chennai Suburban Rail Network stops here every day between approximately 05.00 am and 11 pm every 30 minutes on its way from Chennai Beach to the important railway junction in Chengalpattu. As is usual in India, there are plenty of alternatives: the 18A bus every 25 to 30 minutes, a taxi, a TUK-TUK or a motorcycle taxi.
