Heard Island and McDonald Islands is an archipelago in the Indian sub-Antarctic Ocean, about 4,000 km from mainland Australia. The uninhabited archipelago is Australian foreign territory and comprises Heard Island and the islands of McDonald, Flat, and Shag, as well as a number of rocks and mini islands. The islands are managed by the Australian Antarctic Division of the Department of the Environment and Heritage in Canberra. A maximum of 400 visitors is allowed on the islands per year, and not more than 60 at once. The islands are only accessible by boat, the 2-week trip to the islands is quite adventurous.

The total area of the island group is about 412 km ², Heard island has 368 square kilometres. The island group is a nature reserve, home to seals and birds. On Heard island there is a 2,745 m high active volcano, Big Ben. The islands of Heard and McDonald consist of volcanic rock and limestone. The Kerguelen plateau is an underwater mountain range, rising to 3,700 m above the ocean floor.

The archipelago is a protected area with no introduced species and represents an almost unique ecosystem. In 1997 the archipelago was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The islands are only accessible by boat.
