The mammoth trip from Los Angeles (LAX) to Sydney (SYD) is certainly one giant leap for mankind by anyone's standard. It takes almost 15 hours to travel the 7 500 miles. But despite its grueling length this flight route remains popular among travelers of any description, with 4-5 daily direct flights currently being offered by airlines like Qantas, Virgin Australia, United and Delta.
The typical low cost airlines are not really equipped to traverse half the globe, so unfortunately you won't get a cheap ticket that way. Saving money on your air ticket will come down to booking as early as possible and avoiding peak seasons.
Landing in the largest city in Australia is thankfully not as intimidating as one would imagine- Sydney-Kingsford Smith International Airport is well connected to the city. Trains take you downtown every 10 minutes, and will do so in the time it takes you to skim a local daily newspaper. You could also rent a car or make use of the route 400 buses which run to and from the airport. Once in the city however, the most appropriate sight-seeing mode of transport has to be the ferry. The vantage point from the water will allow you to get some great views of the Sydney Opera House, which, let's face, is a big part of the reason why you're going.
