History
The history of the airport of Brest began during the First World War. At that time the American marine was looking for a suitable place for its smaller planes near the community of Guipavas. In the 1930s the city of Brest extended the airport, which only comprised one hangar, and constructed a runway measuring 1050 m. In 1947, the airport, which had been destroyed by the Germans, was renewed and the runway was extended to a total length of 1800 m. Until 1960 civilian aviation developed very slowly. It was only in 1961 that the chamber of industry and trade of the city of Brest applied for a permanent concession for the airport. After permission was given to use the airport commercially, a modern control tower was built in 1963. In the following 30 years further extensions and building work took place on the terminal and in the 1990s the runway was further extended to a length of 3100 m. The airport building now comprises 4300m², with an annual total of 800,000 checked in passengers.
