Information on Ryanair
Information on Ryanair
Founded in 1985, Ryanair is now a member of the European Low Fares Airline Association (ELFAA). It is the largest low-cost airline in Europe (just before easyJet), and has now moved up to place 3 of all European airlines (behind Air France / KLM, Lufthansa and British Airways). The success of Ireland’s Ryanair is strongly connected to the success of low-cost airlines in general, which has been evident since the end of the 1990s. However, Ryanair seems to be the sole airline in Europe with a consistent "No frills" concept, almost exclusively serving smaller secondary airports. Steadily rising passenger numbers can be attributed to the airlines offers of low cost, punctuality, and the friendly and efficient service.
Ryanair offers only point-to-point flights, so that it is not responsible for connecting flights, which is an essential element of the short touchdowns of the aircraft at the airports that are served. Ryan air therefore lacks the traditional hubs such as Amsterdam or Frankfurt.
As Europe’s leading low-cost airline Ryanair offers 346 routes between 21 countries in Europe, serving over 100 different airports. Of the fifteen European bases, London Stansted Airport is the most important base for Ryanair. Other bases include Berlin-Schönefeld, Frankfurt-Hahn, Friedrichshafen, Hamburg-Luebeck, Karlsruhe-Baden, Leipzig and Weeze. Outside Europe, only airports in Norway and Morocco are served. About one quarter of all airports operated by Ryanair are located in the United Kingdom and Ireland. Approximately 20% of Ryanair flights commute back and forth between the islands, This tendency is however on the decrease as Ryanair’s European route network is being expanded. Ryanair is also well established in Germany, Spain, Italy, France and Poland, and even here operates a large number of routes. The airline also operates services in North Africa, where it specialises in domestic short-haul flights. Ryanair is treading in the footsteps of Easyjet with the planned expansion towards North Africa and Eastern Europe (former Yugoslavia, the Baltic States).
In 2003 Ryanair bought out the low-cost offshoot Buzz from KLM (UK).
Fleet
Ryanair owns only aircraft of the type Boeing 737 and is planning to buy approximately 120 new Boeing 737-800 by 2010.
