Opened in 1923, the airport is approximately 15 km or 9 miles northwest of San Jose near the town of Alajuela and on highway 1. There is a bus stop opposite the park where there are regular daytime bus services every 25-30 minutes to San Jose and Heredia, and every 10 minutes to Alajuela.
