Mayotte: some information before you go

Mayotte is a French overseas territory near the Comoros islands between the northern part of Madgascar and the north of Mozambique. The island group haas a similar status to the overseas départements, but is not part of the EU. The island, which has been French since 1841 and has been part of the "Collectivité Territoriale" since 1976, is to officially become France's 101st Département in 2011.

The island group (main island "Mayotte", and the two islands "Ile Pamanzi" and "Ile M’Zamboro") is geographically part of the Comoros archipelago. The total area of the islands is about 374 km². The islands are of volcanic origin and surrounded by coral reefs.

Mayotte: when, how and where to go

Mayotte's climate is humid and tropical with two main seasons. During the rainy season from November to March temperatures are higher than in the dry season. The highest point on the islands is Mont Benara on the main island measuring 660 m.

Dzaoudzi International Airport is on the island Petit-Terre (or Pamanzi) east of the main island, which is connected to Mayotte via a bridge. The airport is served regularly from Paris, Reunion and the Comoris islands.

The capital Mamoudzou is on the main island. Near the old market place there is a mixture of colonial and modern architecture. The modern buildings have been built in recent years and now house airports, banks, boutiques and supermarkets.
