French Southern and Antarctic Lands - a guide

The French Southern and Antarctic Lands (Terres australes et antarctiques françaises - T. A. A. F.) are a French overseas territory (Territoire d'outre-mer). The area has no permanent residents. About 150 researchers are temporarily there . Their number may vary according to the season. The economy of the area is small, consisting to a large extent of construction and maintaining the research centres. The islands also serve as starting point for fishing. The most important trade partner is France.

The islands are in the Indian ocean, south of Africa. The territory is small part Antarctic and some smaller islands: Amsterdam and St. Paul, Crozet Island, the Kerguelen Islands and Adélie Land, which is not recognised internationally .

The internationally recognised islands cover an area of 7829 km², the antarctic area covers 500.000 km², is however not recognised under international law.

The islands mainly came about through volcanic action. The highest point is Mont Ross on the Kerguelen with an altitude of 1850 m, the lowest point is at the Indian Ocean.

The climate is Antarctic.

The research ship Marion-Dufresne II is the main means of transport overseas for the scientists and their assistants. Since 1994 tourists have also been permitted to accompany the journey on the Marion-Dufresne II to Crozet, Kerguelen and Amsterdam/Saint-Paul. The ship only goes from Réunion to the French Antarctic islands. Air France and Corsairfly regularly fly from Paris-Orly to Réunion.
