Location
Opened in 1929, but only in use in 1930, the airport is located in Romulus about 20 miles south west of downtown Detroit. To reach the airport use the Interstate I-94 leaving at exit 198 (North Terminal) or the Interstate I-275 , exit 15 (McNamara Terminal).
Between the North Terminal and the Transit Center at Fort Street in downtown Detroit there is a regular bus service provided by the SMART bus number 125 (Fort Street). Various bus routes go from the Transit Center to the Amtrak rail station about 5 km north in the district Hamtramck. The bus route 280 (Middlebelt South) also stops at the airport and goes towards Garden City. Timetable details are available locally or on the internet.
History
The plan to build an airport was conceived in 1927 and completed in 1929. Between 1947 and 1950, county officials expanded the small airport to become Detroit's primary airport. The airport was renamed Detroit-Wayne Major Airport in 1947 and over the next three years expanded in size threefold as three more runways were built.
