History
The low-cost airline Gol Transportes Aéreos was founded in 2000 in Sao Paulo by the multinational concern Grupo Aurea. After being granted a license by the Brazilian aviation authority, the new air carrier was able to begin operations on 15th January 2001. The very successful beginnings were facilitated by the financially ailing and meanwhile insolvent airline, VARIG. After only 3 years in business, on 24th June 2004, the company was able to go public at the Sao Paulo and New York stock exchanges. In the spring of 2007 the entire take over of the national carrier VARIG finally took place. According to the latest information, this traditional company, which has been in existence since 1927, will continue to operate under its own name. GOL, as a separate company, will in the next few years concentrate its efforts on the profitable South American low-cost market, while VARIG will be responsible for long-haul international routes.
