The airport is incorporated into the high-speed train network of the French railway by a TGV connection. There is also a shuttle bus from the main station in Lyon to the airport and vice versa with daily services running from 6 am to 11.30 pm. The so-called SATOBUS also has a daily service between the airport and important cities in the Rhône-Alpes region. There are also daily bus routes to other cities in the Provence such as Marseille, Nice and Cannes.

History
The airport was opened officially on the 12th April 1975 by the then state president Valéry Giscard d’Estaing under the former name Aéroport Lyon-Satolas. Only many years later, on 29th June 2000, was the airport renamed after the famous Frenchman Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. In the meantime, the regional airport had established itself and could show continually growing passenger numbers. Since 1989, the Chamber of trade of Lyon, together with the state and the communal authorities, developed an important investment programme in order to ensure that the capacities of the airport are increased. The airports development was especially influenced by these important measures to increase the capacity, the increasing popularity and the airports use as hub of Air France. The easy accessibility of the airport, especially from Lyon, and the larger cities in the region of Rhône-Alpes also proved advantageous. Lyon airport has thus become the hub of the region Rhône-Alpes.
