Description: Chicago Midway International Airport is Chicago’s second airport and is situated in the south-west of the city in the federal state of Illinois. Originally founded as Chicago Air Park in 1923, it was mainly used for air mail services, until it was renamed Chicago Municipal Airport on 12.12.1927. The official renaming to Chicago Midway Airport, to honour the battle of Midway in WWII, took place on 08.07.1949 after a unanimous vote of the city council.
Location: From Chicago Midway airport, the Chicago loop may be reached via the Interstate I-55 towards the north going from there to downtown Chicago. The northern suburbs of Chicago may be reached using the I-44 to the south to the I-294 towards the north and then continuing on the I-290 to the north. The western suburbs on the other hand, are accessible from the I-294 via the I-88 to the west. The airport Midway International can also be reached using public transport operated by the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA), as for example the Orange Line (Chicago’s “L“) as well as the regional buses, downtown and suburban Shuttles, which are all accessible from the entrance area of the terminals. Midway airport is one of the few airports in America with direct train links at the airport.
History: With more than 100,000 passengers using a total of 60947 flights, Chicago International airport was in 1932 given the title of "World’s Busiest Airport" and retained this title for three decades until it was given to Chicago O’Hare in 1962. Before it was outrun in the late 50s by O’Hare, Midway was not only the most frequented airport in the world but also one of the central hubs for US-American airlines, amongst these was United Airlines, which had its main base here at Midway Airport and American Airlines, which moved to New York in the 30s. In September 2006, both airlines ended scheduled flights at Midway International airport and concentrated their flights in the Chicago region at O’Hare.

In the course of reconstruction and renovation from 1958 to 1967 the large airlines came back to Chicago International Airport after several years of absence. Midway Airlines also took up air traffic from the airport between 1979 and 1991 and became the flagship of Midway Airport, which it made its hub. Now, Chicago Midway is primarily used by low-cost airlines.
Destinations: Chicago Midway Airport is the main base of ATA Airlines, which fly from here to cities in Mexico and the Caribbean. TWA, Eastern Air Lines and other airlines were strongly represented at Chicago Airport, but the airline most strongly represented at the moment is Southwest Airlines. The second largest airline at Chicago International is AirTran Airways. It serves 8 destinations with its 30 daily non-stop flights and is soon to extend its services to include direct connections to Fort Myers, Miami and West Palm Beach. From January 2007, 11 destinations are to be served non-stop, with 33 take-offs daily.

Big Sky Airlines announced the start of direct scheduled flights to and from Springfield, Illinois, from the 03.12.2006, whereby 4 flights are to be operated on weekdays and 2 at the weekend. The airlines Delta Connection operated by Atlantic Southeast Airlines (Atlanta), Frontier Airlines (Denver), Northwest Airlines (Detroit, Minneapolis/St. Paul), Continental Airlines (Newark) and others also operate flights from Midway airport in Chicago. Despite the immense expansion in the last few years, Chicago Midway airport is still smaller than Chicago O’Hare International airport; its proximity to Chicago’s Loop is, however, an advantage.
