Cancellation
Flight cancellation means that a previously scheduled flight is not carried out. In the event of a cancellation, certain passenger rights are in place as stipulated by EU legislation and travellers will be entitled to some sort of compensation. Passengers are normally given the choice between a refund of the ticket price or alternative travel. Additional services are also provided such as vouchers for meals and drinks, free phone calls and other means of communication, and if necessary accommodation in a hotel until the next possible opportunity to travel.
When a flight is cancelled passengers may also receive compensation of up to 600 €. This compensation is not normally paid outright, however. If the flight is cancelled due to bad weather or because of a strike, then this will in most cases count as a force majeure. In such extraordinary circumstances, the airline will not have to compensate passengers if a flight is cancelled. However, the airline must always inform passengers of their rights and offer alternative transport. If the flight cancellation is not due to force majeure, the airline will pay compensation of 200 to 600 Euros. The amount of compensation depends on the length of the journey. If a flight is cancelled due to technical problems, then the airline must prove that the circumstances leading to the cancellation were neither frequent nor foreseeable, otherwise it is obliged to pay compensation. If the cancellation occurs as a result of technical damage that has been caused by extraordinary circumstances, then compensation does not have to be paid. However, the airline must be able to prove that the defect was in fact caused by extraordinary circumstances.
