First in use in 1945, the airport is about 12 miles north of downtown Rio de Janeiro on an island, the Ilha do Governador. Between the inner city and the airport there is an airport bus, operated by "Real Auto Onibus“, that runs at 20 to 30 minute intervals between the hours of 5 am and 11 pm. There are also taxis in front of the terminal.
