Merida - Alberto Carnevali Airport is one of the major airports in the South American Republic of Venezuela. Since the crash of Santa Barbara Airlines plane (ATR-42) on 21 February 2008, there are no scheduled flights from Merida. El Vigia International Airport currently serves as an alternative airport and is only about 75 km (approx. 50 miles) west of Merida.
