Information on Luxair
Luxair
LUXAIR is the national airline of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. During the late 1950?s, Luxembourg’s economy underwent a diversification of activities and started shifting its main focus from steel production to the financial and service sectors. Around the same time, Luxembourg, one of the founder states of the European community, was designated as the seat of several important European institutions. The combination of these circumstances created, more than ever, a real need for efficient air connections between Luxembourg and other European capitals. Consequently, the "Luxembourg Airlines Company", created in 1948, was reorganized in 1961 to meet these requirements and changed its name to "LUXAIR - Société Luxembourgeoise de Navigation Aérienne". In 1962, LUXAIR started flight operations with the launch of the Luxembourg-Paris route with a Fokker Friendship F27. This was the beginning of a continuous and fast commercial growth. One year later, Luxair purchased its first own aircraft: a Fokker Friendship F27. Increasing air traffic between Luxembourg and major European cities soon required additional aircraft purchases. By 1967, Luxair’s fleet consisted of three Fokker Friendship and one Vickers Viscount. The latter was replaced in 1970 by the airline’s first jet liner, a Caravelle built by Sud Aviation in Toulouse. The first Boeing aircraft, a B737-200, joined the fleet in 1977. Over the years, Luxair gradually replaced its fleet with modern Boeing 737-400 and -500 jets as well as Fokker F50 and Embraer Brasilia turbo-props. In October 1997, the signature of a purchase agreement for two new EMB 145 Regional Jets marked the beginning of a new era for Luxair: the all-jet era. In September 1998, Luxair placed five additional orders for Embraer?s 50-seat ERJ-145 regional jet, thus bringing its total commission to 7 firm orders and 2 options. Luxair took delivery of its first two "Eurojet" in August and October 1998 and expects the remaining seven jets to join its fleet by the year 2002. The new jets will gradually replace Luxair?s Fokker 50 and EMB-120 Brasilia on destinations such as Copenhagen, Frankfurt, Hamburg, London/Stansted, Manchester, Milan/Bergamo, Nice, Rome and Vienna. Luxair has given its new ERJ-145 the name ?Eurojet?, a choice that Luxair?s President and C.E.O., explains as follows: ?This name underlines the European character of our company. The arrival of the ?Eurojet? will allow us to expand our route network with departure from Luxembourg Airport that will develop into a hub for regional air traffic in Europe. In a Europe united by a single currency, the Euro, the ?Eurojet? will provide fast and comfortable links to major European cities.? Developed in an international collaboration of renowned aircraft manufacturers, the "Eurojet" are produced in Brazil. They are equipped with Rolls Royce Allison engines whose emission values are by far inferior to the maximum defined by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO). They seat 50 passengers, have an action range of 1.320 nm and are crewed by two pilots and two cabin attendants. Marketing surveys during the first years of Luxair’s scheduled operations revealed a significant customer interest in air travel to holiday destinations in the Mediterranean area. Luxair decided to meet this demand and started operating flights to resorts such as Barcelona, Nice and Palma de Mallorca. These charter activities expanded considerably and led, in 1968, to the creation of Luxair’s own tour-operator department LUXAIRTOURS. Today, thanks to its extensive European network, LUXAIR provides excellent travel opportunities for both business and leisure travellers and plays an important part in the economic development of the Grand -Duchy and the neighbouring regions of Saar, Lorraine and Rhineland-Palatinate.
