Afriqiyah Airways
Afriqiyah Airways was founded in 2001 in Tripoli by the Libyan government. The director of the airline is Sabri Saad Shadi. The Libyan government owns a 51 % share of the company. The airlines first flight took place on 2nd December 2001 with a Boeing 737-400 from Tripoli to Khartoum (Sudan). There were 75 passengers. The numbers 9-9-99 were chosen as a symbol for the airline Afriqiyah Airways, in accordance with the proclamation of the African Union on 9th September 1999 in Sirte. The airline is also connected to the organisation of the CEN-SAD states. Afriqiyah Airways presently only owns 2 leased aeroplanes of the type Boeing 737-400 dating from 1991 and 1992. Currently, there are services to the cities: Bamako, Cotonou, Lomé, Ouagadougou, Niamey, N’djamena, Khartoum, Abidjan. The airline also serves several airports in Europe.
