First Air began when Russel Bradley (founder) started a pilot training center in Ottawa in the mid 1940s. He and his pilot partner, Weldy Phipps, developed manifold Arctic flying innovations such as large balloon-like “tundra tires”, thereby expanding the range of possibilities where clients could land in the High Arctic.
Since then First Air has matured to become one of Canada's premier Arctic remote region carriers. Through a series of strategic acquisitions over the years (incorporating Ptarmigan Airways and NWT Air) First Air has expanded its fleet, its route system as well as its air carrier capability.
First Air flies from cities like Ottawa, Montreal, Winnipeg and Edmonton, to a large network of 30 northern communities, even in the most unforgiving weather conditions.
