Information on Binter Canarias
Binter Canarias, S.A. was founded on 18 February 1988 by Grupo Iberia as a subsidiary of Iberia with the aim of operating passenger and cargo transport in the Canaries which was up until then served by Iberia and Aviaco with B-727 and DC-9 jet aircraft and Fokker F-27 turboprop aircraft. As from 26 July 2002 the company was property of a consortium of businessmen from the Canary Islands. On March 26th 1989, it began operating 36 daily flights with an initial fleet of four aeroplanes of the type CN-235 with 40 seats which were manufactured by Aeronautics Constructions (CASA) in their Sevillian factory. In the following months planes (ATR-72 with 72 seats) were gradually incorporated into the fleet. The first connections served by Binter Canarias linked or connected the Islands of Gran Canaria, Tenerife, La Palma and Fuerteventura. This was followed by Lanzarote and El Hierro. Between 1995 and 1998, three planes DC-9 rented from Iberia were also in operation. On July 1999, Gomera Airport was incorporated into the network. By the end of 1996, Binter Canarias S.A. reorganised its structure and acquired another three planes. During 2003 two new planes were also bought, raising the number of ATRs to thirteen. In 2003 Binter Canarias operated an average of 128 daily flights in the winter season and 142 flights in the summer season. With this programme, it links all airports in the Canary Islands with its headquarters in Gran Canaria and Los Rodeos (Tenerife), as well as operating weekend flights on secondary routes (Gran Canaria-El Hierro, El Hierro- La Palma and La Palma-Lanzarote).
