Helpful hints for travelers to Mexico City

US citizens can enter the country without a visa. For this purpose, a tourist card is issued to the traveler on entry, which must be presented again when leaving the country. Vaccinations against typhoid, tetanus, diphtheria and hepatitis A are recommended, but not mandatory. It should also be noted that foodstuffs may not be imported. In addition, gold, archaeological artifacts and antiques, among other things, may not be brought out of the country. It is also important to note that alcohol may not be consumed in public in Mexico City. Violations can be punished with fines or imprisonment.

The cost of living in the city is comparatively low. For example, a meal in a restaurant costs around 80 to 150 MXN (Mexican pesos). For a beer you can expect to pay about 50 MXN and for soft drinks about 15 MXN.

The central city can be reached quickly and conveniently from the airport using various metro lines. From the metro stations "Terminal Aérea" and "Pantitlán", numerous destinations in the city can be reached. Line 1 leads directly to the center (stop: "Insurgentes"). Within the airport, passengers can reach the individual terminals free of charge using the "Aerotrén". The city center can also be reached by metro bus line 4, for which a fee is charged. A cab ride costs approximately 100 to 300 MXN. Cab tickets must be purchased in advance at the terminal counter.

Mexico City also offers its visitors a wide range of accommodation options. Guesthouses and backpacker hostels charge about 200 MXN for one night. An overnight stay in a three-star hotel starts at about 400 MXN.

The capital's public transportation network is good and includes the metro, city buses and trains, and mini and trolley buses. For the metro, pay around 5 MXN per ride. Rechargeable cards for the metro are available from about 10 MXN. The starting price for a cab ride for 3 kilometers is about 20 MXN. For each additional kilometer, you will pay about 8 MXN. However, for safety reasons, cabs should be pre-booked or used from an official stand ("sitio"). Cabs directly from the street may be cheaper, but their use carries a higher safety risk.
