Description:
|
Washington Dulles International Airport is the biggest airport in Washington D.C. and one of the largest commercial airports in the USA. The airport, which was opened on 17.11.1962, is 41 km west of Washington D.C. in Dulles, Virginia, at the borders to Fairfax County and Loudoun County, Virginia. It is situated partly in Chantilly, partly in Dulles, west of Herndon and south-west of Sterling, and was named after John Foster Dulles, a United States Secretary of State under Dwight D. Eisenhower.
Dulles International Airport serves as the main hub of United Airlines and JetBlue Airways flies from here to most of its destinations. Together with JetBlue Airways and AirTran Airways, Independence Air for a short time turned the airport in Washington D.C. into the biggest low-cost airline hub in the United States. Dulles is still the second busiest transatlantic hub on the north American east coast. Meanwhile, after Transatlantics decline, JetBlue has extended the range of flights offered at Dulles airport and now provides six non-stop flights daily to Boston and New York as well as to Long Beach, Oakland, Fort Lauderdale, Las Vegas, West Palm Beach and San Diego, in this respect turning JetBlue into the second largest airline in Dulles.
Airlines at the main terminal include Air Wisconsin, Alitalia, Frontier, Grupo TACA and USAirways. The larger airlines operating at the Midfield Terminal include Aeroflot (Moscow-Sheremetyevo), Air France (Paris-Charles de Gaulle), All Nippon Airways (Tokyo-Narita), Continental Airlines (Cleveland, Houston-Intercontinental), Delta Air Lines (Atlanta, Cancún, Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky, Salt Lake City), KLM (Amsterdam), Korean Air (Seoul-Incheon), Northwest Airlines (Detroit, Minneapolis/St. Paul), Scandinavian Airlines System (Kopenhagen), Southwest Airlines (Chicago-Midway, Orlando, Tampa), US Airways (Charlotte) and Virgin Atlantic (London-Heathrow) as well as Air Canada, Alaska Airlines, America West, American Airlines (Dallas/Fort Worth, Los Angeles, Miami, San Juan), British Midland, Lufthansa (Frankfurt, Munich) and United Airlines (Brussels, Buenos Aires-Ezeiza, Denver, Mexico City, New Orleans, Phoenix, Portland, Rio de Janeiro-Galeão, Sacramento, San Francisco, São Paulo-Guarulhos, Seattle/Tacoma, Vancouver, Zurich).
Washington Dulles Airport is accessible via the Dulles Access Road (State Route 267) or State Route 28. These access roads connect Dulles International Airport with the Highway, the Capital Beltway and the Interstate I-66. The Washington Metro at the moment only provides one Express Metrobus, number 5A, but from 2015 a new underground line, the silver line, will link Washington Airport to the Dullesper train.
