Vienna Schwechat International Airport is Vienna’s international airport as well as being home airport to Austrian Airlines. Situated 18 km south-east of Vienna, the airport was built in 1938 as a military airport. Until 1945, the fighter pilot school 5 was based there which was later taken over by the British allies. The operating company was founded in 1954 and took over the former Vienna-Aspern airfield.
Vienna International Airport was linked to the eastern motorway A4 in 1984. Due to neutrality the airport had been an important link to Eastern Europe even before the fall of the iron curtain. Today, Austria’s largest passenger airport is an important east-west hub for European air traffic.
As early as in 2004, a growing increase in passenger was noted, not only as the catchment area of the airport reached well into the east as a result of EU enlargement. Therefore, Vienna airport also became the logistical centre of many companies which serve the entire eastern European area from here. Strong cooperation also exists between the airport in Vienna and Luqa Airport in Malta.
Airlines represented at Terminal 1 include: Star Alliance, Emirates and Aeroflot, and airlines based at Terminal 1A NIKI, Air Berlin, Germanwings, SN Brussels, Blu-Express, SkyEurope and Job Air (the latter being temporary until the Skylink has been completed). All other airlines are to be found in Terminal 2, whereas Terminal 3 (Skylink) is still under construction and is expected to be taken into operation in 2008.
Vienna airport is accessible non-stop from Vienna’s central station in the city centre using the City Airport Train (CAT). There is also the bus service Vienna Airport Lines, several bus routes which run from parts of Vienna (Schwedenplatz, Südbahnhof, Westbahnhof) directly or via just a few stops to and from the airport. Bus services also exist to Bratislava airport in Slovakia. The most convenient option is to use the S-Bahn, which, just as the City Airport Train, runs at half-hourly intervals between Wolfsthal, Vienna -Schwechat Airport and the city of Vienna. Those arriving by car should take the airport motorway A4, the exit “airport” leads directly to the terminal building.
