Tampa International Airport is a public airport in the US state of Florida, serving the Tampa Bay Area, and is considered the birthplace of commercial aviation. Tampa International airport is 3 miles west of downtown Tamp on the eastern coast of Tampa Bay near downtown Tampa and Clearwater Damm.

Location:

In 1952, the second terminal opened near the crossroads of Columbus Drive and West Shore Boulevard. Motorists head for Columbus Drive or Spruce Street and then drive westwards until reaching the exit for the airport west of Westshore Boulevard. Coming from St. Petersburg and the west take the Interstate I-275 northwards to exit 39B and follow the signs to the airport. Coming from the south (and east) take the I-275 south and leave at exit 39. On Highway 60 the well signposted entrance area of the airport may be reached at the beginning of the Courtney Campbell Causeway. This is directly in the south at the end of Veterans Expressway, driving east on Highway 60.

History:

Drew Field, which was completed by the city in 1928, was used during the second world war by the US government and was expanded and modernised and renamed Drew Army Airbase. Eastern and National Airlines then came to Drew Field, which was renamed Tampa International Airport in 1950 when Trans Canada Airlines took up international flights. Capital, Delta, Northeast, Northwest and Trans World Airlines came later. Flights to Mexico City were operated from 1961 on a weekly basis by Pan American. In 1977, National Airlines began flying to Amsterdam and Paris.
