Norman Y. Mineta San José International Airport is a medium sized US-American airport in San Jose, California. It is 1 mile from the northern part of town near the junction of three large Freeways, the Highway 101, Interstate I-880 and the Highway 87.

Location:

The airport may be reached using the Highway 87 towards the north to exit Skyport Drive. The Highway 87 may be reached via the Highway 85 and 101. On highway 101, exit First Street/Brokaw Road to Brokaw Road may also be used and the airport reached using the underpass. The Interstate I-280 also brings motorists to the Highway 87, and the Interstate I-680, which turns into the I-280. The exit for Coleman Avenue that leads to the Airport Boulevard, which goes directly to the airport, may only be reached using the Interstate I-880 and Highway 17.
Passengers using the Caltrain can reach the airport via the VTA Route 10 connection, the Airport Flyer near Santa Clara (Caltrain/ACE Station). By changing at the Metro/Airport Light Rail Station those using the VTA city trains may use the VTA Route 10. Besides the public transport provided by VTA (Valley Transportation Authority) and BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) there are also scheduled bus services and Greyhound and Amtrak services.

American Airlines is today, despite having given up its hub here, the second busiest airline at San Jose International Airport - Norman Y Mineta after Southwest Airlines. Despite its reputation as the most popular city in the San Francisco Bay Area, Mineta San José International Airport is the smallest of the three airports in the Bay Area with scheduled air traffic. The airport is used by less than a third as many passengers as the international main airport in the region, San Francisco International Airport (SFO), and a little less than Oakland International Airport (OAK).
The airport serves to relieve the busy airport and the local residents who do not have to travel far to San Jose (CA). Low-cost airlines such as Southwest have found a lucrative market here and are not subject to the delays caused by weather due to fog, as is the case in San Francisco. In November 2001 the former San José International Airport was renamed after Norman Yoshio Mineta, a former mayor, congress member and United States Secretary of Transportation, and who came from San Jose.
The first of three phases of a nine-year plan to expand the airport began in August 2004. This includes linking the passenger transport system to terminal 2 via the VTA city railway and the planned BART Station, which borders on the current Santa Clara Caltrain Station. On 6.11.2005 a scaled down airport improvement plan was agreed on and the new two phase plan inlcudes the expected completion of the northern area with a simplified terminal B in 2007. Terminal B is intended to replace the old Terminal C and Terminal A is to be extended.
