Description: San Francisco International Airport is one of the two biggest international airports in California and the largest in the San Francisco Bay area. It is 13 miles south of San Francisco’s downtown in a raised part of San Francisco Bay, bordering on the towns of Millbrae and San Bruno in San Mateo County.
Location: There is a highway link to the U.S. Route 101 and the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) Station near one of the terminals. The interstate 380 crosses the U.S.-Highway 101 north of the airport and provides more connections within the region. The extension of the Bay Area Rapid Transit Systems to the airport was opened omn 22nd June 2003 allowing passengers at the airport to change directly into the trains of the high-speed BART line, which serves the San Francisco area along with other destinations in the Bay Area Region. The AirTrain Shuttle System was also taken into operation in 2003 and transports air passengers in small automated trains between the terminals, car parks, the BART station and the car rental terminals at the airport. At Millbrae station it is also possible to change for Caltrain local trains going to San José and San Francisco, SamTrans-Buses serve the rest of the peninsular.
History: San Francisco airport, which was opened on 7th May 1927, was originally a piece of leased land known by the name of Mills Field Municipal Airport. Until 1931 it remained Mills Field, before the name was changed to San Francisco Municipal Airport. The word "municipal" was then changed to “international” in 1955.
Destinations: The airport has 4 terminals of which Terminal 2 is presently closed for rebuilding. Terminals 1 and 3 are used primarily used for flights to domestic locations. International flights are normally operated from terminal 4.

Flights from Terminal 1 are operated by Air Tran Airways, Alaska Airlines, Continental, Southwest , Sun Country, US Airways, Delta, Frontier Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines and Northwest Airlines. Flying from Terminal 3 are United Airlines, Air Canada, Midwest Airlines and American Airlines.
