Raleigh-Durham International Airport serves the U.S. cities of Raleigh and Durham, located 9 miles northwest of Morrisville in Wake County between the two cities in North Carolina. The original airport of Raleigh was officially opened in 1929 south of the city.

Raleigh-Durham is located in the Research Triangle region and is in the vicinity of several major highways, including the Interstate I-40. Using the RDU Airport taxi service passengers may reach the local bus and train stations. Besides the buses operated by the Triangle Regional Transit Authority, the TTA shuttle will transport passengers to a number of destinations in the region, including Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, Cary and Research Triangle Park. Amtrak trains and intercity Greyhound buses will take passengers to more distant locations.

History:

Commercial air traffic began on 01.05.1943 with Eastern Air Lines. After the Second World War, Capital Airlines and Piedmont Airlines were added: in the 1970s Delta Air Lines and Allegheny Airlines, in the 1980s Trans World Airlines and American Airlines. In 1987 the latter opened a hub, which was used until 1996 and resulted in Raleigh-Durham airport being used for the first time for international flights. Midway Airlines then took the place of American Airlines and maintained the hub until 2001. After bankruptcy, Midway became a U.S. Airways Express company with a focus on regional flights within North and South Carolina, but stopped all operations in 2003.
In December 2003, the Airport Authority decided on the expansion and renovation of the airport. The new Terminal C building and the south side are due to be completed by 2010. The newly named Terminal 2 is expected to house American, Air Canada, Continental, Northwest, Delta and United Express, the old Terminal A will be renamed Terminal 1 and house AirTran, jetBlue, Southwest and U.S. Airways. There are also plans to link the airport up with the DMU rapid rail system of the Triangle Transit Authority (TTA).
