Philadelphia International Airport is the largest airport in the catchment area of the North American city Philadelphia in Pennsylvania, also serving the region around Delaware Valley. It is located 8 miles southwest of downtown Philadelphia, some areas of the airport grounds are also located in the Tinicum Township of Delaware County. It is one of the fastest growing airports in the United States, but due to its proximity to New York, also the only major American airport to not offer direct flights to Asia. United offers a direct connection to Hong Kong via Chicago O'Hare. Philadelphia airport is the main international hub for U.S. Airways. From its hub here the airline offers flights to the United States, Canada, the Caribbean, Latin America and Europe. In the year 2005, Philadelphia Airport ranked 9 of the busiest airports in the world.

Downtown Philadelphia can be reached by shuttle bus, public bus or train. The R1 Airport Line connects the airport, the city centre, Philadelphia and other SEPTA, Amtrak and NJ Transit trains at 30th Street Station. More stations are located at the terminals A, B, C, D and E. SEPTA also offers a bus service.
After completion of the first terminal in 1940, the 4 airlines American, Eastern, TWA and United took up flights at the former Philadelphia Municipal airport which received its present name in 1945, when American Overseas Airlines began flying to Europe.
