Location: Orlando International Airport is 7 miles southeast of Orlando on the junction with the State Road 436 (SR 436 - Semoran Boulevard) and State Road 528 (SR 528 - Bee Line / Beach Line Expressway). From the north, for example coming from Altamonte Springs take the Interstate I-4 near Sanford to the SR 417 (Greeneway) south to Orlando International Airport, or take the I-4 heading west to the SR 408 (East-West Expressway) in downtown Orlando and then head east to the SR 436 (Semoran Boulevard), following this south to Orlando International Airport. Alternatively take the I-4 heading west to the SR 528 (Bee Line / Beach Line Expressway) near International Drive / SeaWorld and then leave at exit 11B. Otherwise use the bus, taxi and shuttle services.
History: The airport’s former name was McCoy Air Force Base, after Colonel Michael N. W. McCoy, who died on the air base during an annual competition. The civilian airport was known as Orlando Jetport at McCoy. Besides Orlando International (MCO), Orlando Sanford International Airport (SFB) and the former Herndon Airport, now Orlando Executive Airport (ORL) all serve the Greater Orlando Area. After Denver and Dallas, the airport is the largest in the United States by area.
Destinations: Eastern Air Lines became the “official airline of Walt Disney World” in the 1980s, this role has now been assumed by Delta Air Lines, even if apart from on the route to Atlanta, the airline has no large machines in Orlando. Delta Airlines has focused on regional routes, particularly flights with ComAir, Freedom Airlines and Chautauqua Airlines, all part of the Delta Connection, for which Orlando Airport is a mini-hub. Besides Delta Air Lines, Orlando International Airport is also a hub for AirTran Airways. It received its name and current international status in 1976.
