History: Miami airport, opened as Pan American Field, Miamis international airport, is the hub American Airlines and American Eagle, Executive Air and die Charter Airline Miami Air. Machines of the alliances SkyTeam and Star Alliance fly from here to cities in the whole of America and Europe. Miami International is the first choice Gateway between the USA and Latin America and together with the Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta, it is also one of the biggest air traffic gateways in the American south. Due to the numerous connections to the Caribbean, it is also the third most important international airport in the USA after John F. Kennedy Airport in New York and Los Angeles International Airport. Although most domestic and low-cost airlines use Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and Palm Beach International Airport, Miami airport is still south Floridas main airport for international long-haul connections.

After purchasing New York, Rio and Buenos Aires Line, Pan Am transferred most of its services to the Dinner Key Seaplane Base, and left the Pan Am Field to a large extent unused until Eastern Air Lines took up air traffic there in 1934, followed by National Airlines in 1937. From 1945, Miami airport was known as 36th Street Airport because the city of Miami had founded the Port Authority and bought the airport from Pan Am. In 1949, the airport was merged with a neighbouring army airbase and was further expanded in 1951. Until its bankruptcy in 1991, Pan Am and Eastern were the leaseholders of Miami Airport; their hubs there were then taken over by United Airlines and American Airlines. Whilst American Airlines expanded, United terminated its services in the 1990’s. In 2004, Iberia also closed its hub at Miami Airport in order to operate more direct flights from Spain to Central America.
Destinations: Other airlines based at the airport are: AeroHonduras (San Pedro Sula, Tegucigalpa), Aerolíneas Argentinas (Buenos Aires-Ezeiza), Air Canada (Montréal, Toronto-Pearson), Air France (Paris-Charles de Gaulle, Port au Prince), Alaska Airlines (Seattle/Tacoma), Continental Airlines (Cleveland, Houston-Intercontinental, Newark), Delta Air Lines (Atlanta, New York-LaGuardia), Domodedovo Airlines (Moscow-Domodedovo), LAN Airlines (Bogotá, Caracas, Guayaquil, Quito, Santiago de Chile, Punta Cana), Lloyd Aereo Boliviano (Panama City, Santa Cruz de la Sierra), LTU International (Dusseldorf, Munich), Lufthansa (Frankfurt), Mexicana (Cancún, Mexico City), Northwest Airlines (Detroit, Memphis, Minneapolis/St. Paul), TACA (Guatemala City, San Salvador), TAM (Manaus, São Paulo-Guarulhos) and US Airways (Charlotte, Las Vegas, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh). Charter airlines at the airport include ABC Airlines, AirTransat, Allegro Airlines, European Air, Falcon Air Express, North American Airlines and Ryan International Airlines. At the beginning of 2007, more connections are planned from Avior (Barcelona (Venezuela)), Aero Condor (Lima) and Air Madrid (Madrid).
