Description:
|
Madrid-Barajas International Airport (Spanish: Aeropuerto de Madrid Barajas) is Madrid’s largest airport and the biggest airport in Spain. It is 12 km north-east of the centre of the capital city, in the heartland of Spain near Barajas de Madrid. Madrid-Barajas Airport is the most significant hub in Europe for flights to South America and the hub of Spanish aviation. Barajas is home airport to the airlines Iberia, Air Europa and Spanair.
Construction work on the Aeropuerto Bajaras started in 1928, after it was decided at the beginning of the 1920’s to construct a further airport in addition to the airfields Getafe, Cuadro Viento and Torrejón Central in Barcelona already in existence. This airport was also to have sufficient surface area to enable future expansion. Officially, the airport was taken into operation on 22.04.1931; in 1933 the then-postline LAPE (Líneas Aéreas Postales Españolas) took over the first commercial route to Barcelona and the first international connections followed in the same year.
In the 50’s, the airport was considered the most modern in Europe. Iberias first Lockheed Super Constellation started its first flight to New York in 1954. With the opening of the new Terminal T4 and T4S with the satellite buildings on 05.02.2006, Madrid-Barajas Airport became the second largest in world aviation by area.
By road, the airport is accessible from the A2 (Madrid-Zaragossa) via exit 12 to the M14 (Terminals T1 to T3), as well as from the M40 Sur (South) taking exit 8 to the M12/T4 and through the tunnel (which carries a toll charge) to the signposts T4/T4S for Terminals T1 to T4S. there are buses and micro-buses from all terminals to central parts of the city of Madrid with connections to trains and national bus routes. Since June 1988, the underground route 8 provides a link to the Metro in Madrid, connecting Madrid-Barajas Airport with Nuevos Ministerios railway station.
Amongst the airlines represented at or with their seat at Barajas Airport are: Aeroflot, Air Berlin, Air France, Air Madrid, American Airlines, Austrian Airlines, British Airways, Delta Airlines, Easy Jet, KLM, LTU International Airways, Lufthansa, SAS (Scandinavian Airlines System) and Swiss International Air Lines. Examples of airlines operating flights to the UK from Madrid Barajas Airport are: Aer Lingus (Cork, Dublin), British Airways (London-Gatwick, London-Heathrow), BA Connect (Birmingham, Edinburgh, London-City, Manchester).
