Los Angeles International Airport is an international airport serving Los Angeles city and the surrounding areas in California. Los Angeles International Airport is united with the airports Ontario International Airport, Van Nuys Airport and Palmdale Regional Airport under the abbreviation LAWA (Los Angeles World Airports). It is 24 km south-west of Los Angeles and is one of the largest airports in the world, whilst also being the fifth busiest in the world.

There is a free shuttle service running between all 10 terminal buildings and the somewhat remote car parks. Besides using the airport bus and the shuttle vans, Los Angeles airport may also be reached using local bus services. The bus centre of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) links the public transport system with the buses from the airport’s LAX Shuttle line. Airport Los Angeles is linked to the MTA’s Green Line Light Rail by shuttle buses. Van Nuys’ FlyAway buses run non-stop between LAX and San Fernando Valley (Van Nuys Airport Bus Terminal, Woodley Avenue near Saticoy Street). From Aviation Metro Rail Station, the airport’s railway station, there are connections to the whole of Los Angeles. City buses also go to destinations in the whole of the LA region from the Metro Bus Centre.

History:
|
Originally known as Mines Field, L.A. Airports location has been in use as a general air traffic base since 1928. In 1937, it was bought up by the city of Los Angeles and renamed Los Angeles Airport in 1941. In 1949, it was finally renamed Los Angeles International Airport. After being used for military planes during WW2, the first passenger airline started in December 1946. The first jet aeroplanes arrived at the airport in 1959 and the first Jumbo Jet, a Boeing 747, was operated by TWA between LAX and New York City in 1970.
