History:
|
Aviation history in Friedrichshafen began as early as 1913, when the then German Reich was in search of a convenient air base near the Zeppelin works where the teams for the helium filled „air ships“ could be trained. In the same year a nearby and suitable place was found. As little as 2 years later the hangar was completed and the „war air ship halls“ Friedrichshafen-Löwental could be inaugurated. In the same year the first manned flight attempts took place. Only 14 years later in the spring of 1929, when the German economy had recovered from the First World War the German Lufthansa (which had been founded in 1926) decided to provide regular scheduled flights from Friedrichshafen to Stuttgart. In 1931 the route was extended and planes flew from Friedrichshafen via Stuttgart, Frankfurt, and Hanover to Hamburg. In the first years of the 2nd World War, the NSDAP transferred the air ship hall to the nearby Zeppelin hangar. This signified the end of air traffic at the airport. Shortly before the end of the war the airport along with the zeppelin hangars, where dangerous V-2 rockets were at that point being produced, were seriously bombed by allied troops.
After the 2nd World War the French air force took the airport into use from the year 1945 and constructed a number of buildings along with extending the runway. Only in the year 1992, after reunification and the retreat of the allied forces, did the regional government of Baden Wurttemberg decide to resume air traffic at the airport. In 1998 the airport, which had until then belonged to the state, was sold to the Friedrichshafen GmbH. Meanwhile, annual passenger numbers are growing steadily and the total number of departed passengers in the business year of 2006 amounted to 650,000. However, as the terminal and the air traffic was originally only constructed to deal with 500,000 passengers, building work is necessary in the coming year. The airport council plans to extend the airport to be able to deal with 1.5 million passengers.
