Chicago O’Hare Airport, also known internationally as O’Hare International Airport, is an international passenger airport in Chicago by Lake Michigan in the US state of Illinois.

O’Hare International Airport is 18 miles north-west of the city of Chicago and is accessible via the Interstate 190 (Route 190). O’Hare airport may also be reached by rail using the Blue Line trains operated by the Chicago Transport Authority (CTA). There is also the possibility of taking regional buses and shuttles. The Omega Airport Shuttle operates hourly services between O’Hare International airport and Midway.

History:

O’Hare International was developed as the city airport in Chicago, after it became clear that Midway Airport, which had been acting as Chicago’ main airport since 1931, would no longer be able to handle the passenger numbers. It was unsuitable in particular for the first generation jet aircraft and so, first scheduled flights from Chicago O’Hare were taken up in 1955. In 1958 the first international terminal was built and then, after extensions were completed in 1962, all domestic air traffic was moved from Midway to O’Hare turning the airport to the busiest airport in the world overnight.
O’Hare is the most important hub of United Airlines, which has its seat at Chicago Airport, and the second largest hub of American Airlines after Dallas/Fort Worth. According to annual passenger numbers Chicago O’Hare airport is the most frequented airport in the world after Atlanta. At present it handles a sixth of all passenger air traffic in the country. It was named after the Navy-Flyer Lt. Cmdr. Edward "Butch" O’Hare, a combat pilot from WW2. During the war, until 1949, it was also known as Orchard Place Airport/Douglas Field.
