Description: Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport is the international airport in the US American city of Baltimore in Maryland. Baltimore-Washington airport serves the entire Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan Area in den United States and is generally referred to as BWI Airport. It is situated 15 km from Baltimore in Anne Arundel County and is operated by the Maryland Aviation Administration (MAA) of the Maryland Department of Transportation.
Location: The Friendship International Airport was opened on 24.06.1950 and Maryland state bought it in 1972 via the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) from the city of Baltimore. In 1973 it was renamed Baltimore/Washington International Airport, in an effort to have a part in the travel market of the Washington region. Since 01.10.2005 it has been known under its current name, after the former US Supreme Court Judge, who grew up in Baltimore.
History: Baltimore/ Washington airport is near the Baltimore-Washington Parkway and is also accessible from Interstate 95 via the motorway access road the Interstate 195. Baltimore Washington Airport has its own train station, BWI Rail Station which was inaugurated in 1980. Trains operated by the MARC Penn Line and Amtrak Northeast Corridor Trains stop here, there are also free shuttle services taking passengers to the airport terminals.

Directly at the international Terminal is the Light Rail of the Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) with its train station. This service takes passengers to a number of destinations in Anne Arundel County, in Baltimore City and Baltimore County. There is also a passage to the Metro Subway in Baltimore or one of the MARC Baltimore Terminals. Bus services operated by the Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) go from BWI Airport to the Parkway Center, to Arundel Mills Mall, the Airport 100 Park and to the Patapsco Light Rail Stop. There is also a link to the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport as well as to the Washington Metrorail Subway Station in Greenbelt, Maryland.
Destinations: British Airways and Icelandair have been present at Baltimore airport for many years. Other airlines such as KLM, AerLingus, Ghana Airways and El Al came later, but have in the meantime stopped flying to BWI. In the 90s, US Airways had their main hub here, but in the meantime the company has reduced its presence at the airport. Since Southwest Airlines joined the ranks in September 1993, the Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan Area has become a major airport for low-cost airlines. From the year 2000, Southwest increased the number of its flights considerably and is today the biggest airline at Baltimore airport with a 47% proportion of passengers.
